Why you don't give fairies caffeine

January 18, 2009

On Ideas...

Inspiration is a crazy thing. You can't control it, you can't harness it. All you can do is sit back and wait for it to happen. Then again, we can't sit around drinking coffee and thinking deep thoughts all the time (fun as that may be). So what do we do for inspiration?

Though we can't control when lightning strikes, there are things we can do to make our careers as idea makers that much more bearable;

  1. Control the environment: Know what inspires you and go there. Whether it's taking off to a museum, art gallery or coffee shop. Or even just listening to your favorite songs over and over again."
  2. Be prepared: when inspiration strikes, be ready. Have a pen on hand, make sure you have all of your materials ready for when that bolt of inspiration hits.
  3. Ride the deadline: Set goals, make sure that if you need to write twenty pages this week, that by the end of the week... You've written twenty pages.
  4. Aim high: you have to write twenty pages. Try to write thirty. if you get there great, and if you only make it to twenty, great.
  5. Start: Don't sit on the ideas expecting them to hatch, just get writing on them. "Good" is good enough.
  6. It ain't over till it's over: The joy of working with computers, when it comes to writing, you have right up until it's posted (and sometimes after that) to get that joke just right.

So that's my Sunday words of advice to the young fledgling writers, cartoonists and artist out there.

Cheers and Jitters:
